Overview

The wreck of the MV Astoria, a general cargo transport, that sank during a severe storm while fully loaded and ready to departure to Jaffna. The wreck is badly damaged. The bow and the stern are intact yet well separated with a large debris field of wreckage and goods amidships. The wreck lies at a depth of 20m and is situated on the Colombo-Chennai roads about 378m west of the new Port City Breakwater.

The wreck has attracted several species of reef fish, such as Moray Eels who make this their habitat and pelagic fish, such as schools of Trevally who thrive around the wreck.

The visibility of the location is not very good owing to close proximity to shore. A survey has not been done since 2014, and especially after the construction activity at the Port City, so the status of the wreck may have changed since the original survey in 2014.
