Overview
Merchant vessel of Maldivian origin that sank off the coast of Mount Lavinia on 31 May 2009. Until March 2011 the Sri Lankan Navy had kept a close watch on the wreck of the Madhufaru for legal and salvage-related issues.
The wreck sank in an upright position. While the overall structure is intact, as of 2021, the wreck is deteriorating slowly and localized collapsation can be observed. The bridge is still upright and its overall structure is retained.
There are several penetration points into the cabins and decks.
There are two front-loaders on deck. There is significant collapsation mid-deck. The main front loader, that was a tourist attraction has fallen from upright to sideways several years ago.
The masts are still upright and ghostnets are found entangled on the mast, especially after the monsoons. (These are generally cleaned up by the local dive centers and the Sri Lanka Sub-Aqua Club)
The wreck is inhabbited by various types of marine life including Blue-Striped Snappers, various species of reef fish including scorpionfish.
