Overview
Lord Nelson Wreck, an iron shipwreck situated near Unawatuna Beach. Located within the shallow reef area known as Goda Gala, the wreck lies at a depth range of 3-5 meters, making it easily accessible to divers and enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The ship got its name, Load Nelson, from local accounts and folklore. According to the local community, in 1996, a relatively small ship anchored outside the harbour ran aground during tumultuous monsoon conditions with heavy winds. The crew abandoned the ship, leaving it stranded. In the following weeks, the wreck attracted the attention of the local people, who saw an opportunity for salvaging goods from the ship. The ship became a target of looting and salvage, as the locals ventured onboard to take what they could.
Subsequently, the wreck underwent a salvage operation for its scrap metal, which involved the use of explosives to dismantle the ship. As a result, much of the superstructure and hull parts were salvaged, leaving behind only the bottom part of the stern end and the scattered hull remains visible today.
Despite the significant salvage efforts, the Lord Nelson Wreck has evolved into a thriving marine ecosystem. The wreck provides habitat and sanctuary for numerous small fish species, offering them protection and ideal breeding grounds. Divers exploring the wreck can witness an array of vibrant marine life and enjoy the beauty of the underwater world.
While the Lord Nelson Wreck no longer bears recognizable ship parts or objects, remnants such as scattered iron chains can be found around the shipwreck, intertwined with the rocks. The combination of historical significance and marine diversity makes the Load Nelson Wreck a beloved and cherished dive site, attracting both local and international divers seeking a memorable and adventurous underwater experience off Unawatuna Beach.
