Overview
This shipwreck is positioned at a maximum depth of 22m, about 4km off the point Sangamankanda, an area which is about 88km southeast of Batticaloa. Constructed by Russel & Co. Ltd. in Greenock (Scotland) and owned by Brocklebank T. & J. Ltd. in Liverpool (England), SS Maimyo was employed as a British cargo ship, starting from 1918. This iron vessel weighed 5819t and was 129m (423ft 2in) in length and 17.1m (56ft) in breadth. The hull depth of the ship was 8.7m (28ft 5in). Powered by three boilers and a 3-cycle triple expansion engine with a single propeller, this steam vessel was of 561-horsepower and could reach a maximum speed of 12knots (nautical miles per hour).
On the 24th December 1936, this British steamer was on a voyage from Calcutta (India) to London carrying cargo and wrecked by hitting at a boulder reef. The wreck parts of SS Maimyo are currently positioned in a range of depths from 5m-22m, being the bow (front) section at a depth of about 7m on a rock, while the middle and the stern (rear) sections lie at 12m and 22m depths respectively on a sandy seabed.
This wreck was initially known as ‘Umari Boiler Wreck’ as it is sunk in the vicinity of the Umari coast. The bell found at the shipwreck revealed a number of important details about the vessel and currently is on display at the Colombo Golf Club.
